Volunteer Role Peer Volunteer – Tigrinya Speaker (Dundee)
Time Commitment 6 hours per week
Responsible to Service Manager Hannan Najar and Administrator Mary Wallace
Location At the SRC Dundee Office, 1 Shore Terrace, Dundee or working from home as required
Duration At least 6 months

Scottish Refugee Council team based in Dundee supports refugees to integrate into the community in Dundee and the wider UK. We use a range of methods to facilitate this including Social Media.

What will I be doing?

Your duties will be varied but will include:

  • Translating messages from English into Tigrinya for WhatsApp messages.
  • Translating in person to support communication with Advisers and other professionals.
  • Working closely with volunteers and members of staff
  • Occasionally accompanying clients for appointments to support interpretation.
  • Adding voiceovers to the videos created by the social media volunteer (internal training will be provided).

What skills and qualities do I need?

  • A good level of English and Tigrinya
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work with a range of different people including asylum seekers and refugees
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Reliability, punctuality and enthusiasm
