It’s our 40th birthday. Scottish Refugee Council chief executive Sabir Zazai reflects on 40 years of helping refugees rebuild their lives.
On 31 July 1985, Scottish Refugee Council became a charity. Four decades on, we remain unwavering in our commitment to ensuring all people seeking sanctuary here in Scotland are welcomed and supported to rebuild their lives.
Thank you for joining us on this journey. We couldn’t have reached such an important milestone without you.
The story of Scottish Refugee Council is the story of Scotland. It is one of strength, resilience and community. We are proud of what we have achieved together and proud of the warm welcome people receive when they settle here.
But sadly, our work is more needed than ever. Refugee rights are under increasing threat. While people seeking safety face constant attacks in the media and scapegoating by politicians.
Behind these headlines are real people with hopes and dreams. Men, women and children who have been forced from their homes by war and persecution and are looking for the chance to rebuild their lives. Instead of being welcomed and supported, they face more fear and uncertainty.
We are determined to be there for people seeking safety in Scotland – but we need your help.
Building a better future with refugees in Scotland isn’t only about ensuring immediate safety. It’s about creating a long-term sense of belonging and enabling people to play an active role in their new communities. Across Scotland, we are working to meet people where they are. We’re developing tailored advice and support services, and forming meaningful partnerships that empower New Scots to flourish.
As we look towards the next chapter, we do so with optimism and determination. The road to a more inclusive Scotland is long but it is one we walk together.
