The City of Edinburgh Council offers ESOL and family learning opportunities. Our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes are for adults living in Edinburgh. These classes aim to help adults learn or improve their English, making everyday tasks easier.
For example:
- Talking to doctors and teachers
- Helping your child with homework
- Managing other day-to-day communication
Classes take place once a week, either online via MS Teams or face-to-face in classrooms. These are non-accredited classes.
Resettlement Programme
Our Resettlement Programme provides ESOL classes for refugees eligible under the UK Resettlement Scheme. We offer classes from pre-literacy to beginner levels, along with Family Learning groups and activities for parents and children. We also organise short-term interest groups, such as Political Literacy, to support integration.
Family Learning
We run parent-and-child activity sessions for families in temporary emergency accommodation with interactive English language learning for families from Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. These sessions often take place during school holidays and include:
- Storytelling and rhymes
- Play-based learning
- Learning through arts and crafts
- Learning English with board games
We also hold English conversation classes in the community and at some local primary schools. These classes help parents meet others and feel welcome in their new school and community.
