On International Youth Day (12 August), our youth-led advocacy group Young People’s Voices proudly launched their impactful peer-led research report Your Voice Matters.
Your Voice Matters is more than just a report; it is a call for change. Conducted by young people with lived experience of seeking asylum, the report highlights the unique challenges faced by themselves and their peers and presents recommendations for improvement. This youth-led initiative shines a light on the critical areas needing attention and urges policymakers and stakeholders to take action.
The report’s launch is a testament to the power of youth-led advocacy. It underscores the importance of amplifying the voices of those directly affected by the asylum process, ensuring they are not only heard but also influence the decisions that shape their lives.
One of the group’s members said:
“People in Scotland have been very welcoming and care a lot about us and we appreciate that. But some young people don’t have their rights, some aren’t in education and some are housed in inappropriate asylum accommodation such as hotels. They should have a better life and the same rights as others. We want to show the report to people who have power. We will keep fighting for our rights and the rights of others.”
Young People’s Voices, supported by Scottish Refugee Council staff through the Guardianship Scotland service, stands as a beacon of hope this International Youth Day. The group reminds us all of the crucial role that young people play in shaping a more just and inclusive society.
