Once you’ve completed your substantive interview and any follow-up interviews the Home Office requires, the Home Office will decide the outcome of your application for protection in the UK. This might take months or years.
Your entitlement to financial and accommodation support will change very quickly after you receive a decision.
Positive decision
If the Home Office agrees that you need protection in the UK (a positive decision), you will be granted leave to remain.
You may be granted refugee status, humanitarian protection or discretionary leave to remain.
Negative decision
If your asylum claim is refused, it is important to seek legal advice as soon as you can. You may be able to appeal the decision (make a legal challenge). Your decision letter from the Home Office should tell you whether you are able to appeal.
