We are concerned by recent reports about inadequate accommodation for new mothers and babies in Glasgow.
In response, Scottish Refugee Council Chief Executive Sabir Zazai said:
“We are very concerned by reports in the media today of unsuitable living conditions at Mears Group’s mother and baby unit in the southside of Glasgow. We are investigating these reports with partners and seeking answers from Mears.
We believe, as a rule, that all people and especially pregnant women and new mums and babies, should be able to remain settled and safe in their existing flats and houses. This is even more important right now in the middle of the pandemic. Any move should only happen on the basis of an individual, person-centred needs assessment.
We recognise that Mears Group has worked to refurbish the accommodation in the unit. But any space provided must offer the space and facilities necessary for babies and young children to thrive, and for mums to be able to nurture them at this crucial stage.”
