We are incredibly proud of our peer volunteers at our Dundee refugee resettlement service who have created a series of video resources for people rebuilding their lives in the city.
Recognising the challenges faced by people arriving in a new country with limited English, peer volunteers have created a series of translated videos to help guide them through setting up and accessing essential services through Dundee City Council’s MyDundee platform.
The videos are available in Ukrainian and Arabic and currently cover:
• How to set up a MyDundee account (Arabic / Ukrainian)
• How to apply for a student council tax exemption using MyDundee (Arabic / Ukrainian)
• How to request a housing repair using MyDundee (Arabic / Ukrainian)
Peer volunteers are individuals who have personally faced the challenges of resettlement and now use their experiences to help others in similar situations. Their first-hand knowledge and empathy make them uniquely equipped to provide support and create impactful and accessible resources.
In the words of some of our Dundee peer volunteers:
“We hope these translated videos will help people who don’t speak English as a first language to access vital services.”
“We hope the videos will help people feel more welcome and supported.”
“We know how difficult it can be to start over in a new country, so we wanted to create something that would be helpful and informative.”
“We know how overwhelming it can be to navigate a new system in a different language. By creating these videos, we hope to make the process a little bit easier for newcomers, giving them the confidence to access the services they need and start building their new lives in Dundee.”
By using their own language skills and cultural understanding, our peer volunteers are making a real difference in the lives of people seeking safety in Dundee. Well done!
