Our teams in Glasgow and Perth joined Fly with Me: an epic kite-flying festival of solidarity with the Afghan community by Good Chance Theatre.

The creators of The Jungle and The Walk with Amal invited people across the UK to build kites and fill the skies with a symbol of welcome and solidarity with people fleeing Afghanistan.

Good Chance joined up with local arts projects, third sector organisations and community groups to make the day a success.

Our teams in Glasgow and Perth joined the fun and had a brilliant time!

Kite-flying at Glasgow Green

In Glasgow, local groups worked with the Citizens Theatre and Fairooz Khan and Elena Mary Harris from the Fly with Me team.

Together they built kites which they took to the skies at Glasgow Green on Saturday 20th August 2022.

17 young people supported by our Scottish Guardianship Service came together in a fantastic workshop to make kites from scratch.

The young people then had the opportunity to fly their new kites at the event in Glasgow Green. The weather was perfect, sunny but blustery!

There was music, food and tea, and a great day was had by all.

Our CEO Sabir Zazai joined in the celebrations too, saying:

“My work is inspiring and every day of it reminds me of my own refugee journey. Today’s Fly With Me event in Glasgow was incredible. Flying a kite after some 20 years took me straight back to my childhood days, when the skies of Afghanistan were full of kites, peace and love.”

Local groups involved included Standing Tall Arts, YCSA (Youth Community Support Agency) and The Barn Youth and Community Centre.

Solidarity from Perth

And in Perth, our team joined forces with Community Learning & Development at Perth & Kinross Council for a fun kite-making workshop.

We were joined by Afghan friends who are experts in the craft and had many stories to share!

One of the gentlemen attending commented from the heart: “Thank you so much for bringing back so many memories from so long ago.”
