The main purpose of this group is to reduce isolation and to promote integration of asylum-seeking/refugee women, in particular, women coming from Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran. The group is a peer support group without any paid sessional workers. The group meet once a week at Kingsway Health and Wellbeing Centre.
We provide a platform for women to come together to share information, to talk about issues that matter to them, to receive mutual support from each other and to learn more about their host community. We bring in speakers from various services to raise awareness of available local service and support in the community. We organise social and educational activities for our members to promote health and wellbeing and to reduce isolation. We encourage members to take on voluntary tasks within our group such as helping in organising activities or becoming a member of the management committee in order to learn new skills and build up their confidence. We also run informal and very basic English classes for our members who have no or very little English speaking ability.
