A special parliamentary reception marked forty years of Scottish Refugee Council, bringing together supporters, partners and parliamentarians to look back on four decades of welcome, protection and advocacy.
Sponsored by Humza Yousaf MSP, the event showcased a specially commissioned exhibition of portraits celebrating people who have rebuilt their lives in Scotland.
Created for the anniversary, the exhibition highlighted the strength and resilience of men, women, and children who are now part of communities across the country. Each portrait offers a glimpse into someone’s personal journey, capturing hope, resilience and fresh starts. Together, the images show the many ways refugees contribute to the places they now call home.
The portraits were taken by award-winning photojournalist Angela Catlin, who spent the past year meeting people supported by Scottish Refugee Council. Her thoughtful, respectful approach brings out the individuality and humanity in every person. The collection is a tribute to compassion, community and the power of welcome.
Comfort Anjorin, who spoke about her own journey to safety at the event, said:
“Scottish Refugee Council were my first contact when I arrived in Scotland. I will never forget sitting in their office and hearing the words: “You are safe. You have rights.””
Sabir Zazai, CEO of Scottish Refugee Council, said:
“We don’t have to go to Denmark to see how to treat refugees. The world should look to Scotland to see what we’ve achieved together.”
Humza Yousaf MSP told guests:
“Scotland faces a choice… fear or friendship. I think we can all agree in this room that we choose friendship.”
