Grassroots groups are providing a lifeline for many people during the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic. And this is no different in Falkirk where a community group called the Rainbow Muslim Women’s Group is supporting local households experiencing food shortages during the pandemic.
We recently spoke to Samina Ali, chairperson of the Rainbow Muslim Women’s Group in Falkirk, to find out more about the group and how it’s been supporting the local community during lockdown.
“Our group has been working seven days a week to supply essential food packages and prescription pick-ups in the local community, including refugees, older people, low-income families, and others who are in real desperate need,” explains Samina.
“There are so many people having a really tough time right now, and we believe it is our duty as members of the community to look out for our neighbours.
“Whether it’s food, prescription pick-ups or other supplies, we have been able to help so many people during these difficult times. Our volunteers have been out dropping hundreds of food parcels across the area since the first day of lockdown.”
The organisation would like to thank the public who have been very generous in donating funds to continue our work, as have other community groups and businesses donating food items to reach to those in need in Falkirk. Groups like the local food-poverty action group KLSB Community Pantry, and small retailers like Baby-Steps which supplied female hygiene products and children’s toys. Also supermarket giant Morrison’s contacted the group and contributed towards the effort.
Samina thanks everyone who has been involved with the group and is grateful to the remarkable team of volunteers who are working tirelessly to get supplies to people as quickly as they can.
People self-isolating from the symptoms of coronavirus in the Falkirk area who need essential items can message the group via Facebook, email, or text: 07892438366.
