We are thrilled to have a runner in this year’s London Marathon! Meet school teacher Graeme Morrison, who is taking on the 26.2-mile challenge to raise vital funds in support of people seeking safety in Scotland.
How did you come across Scottish Refugee Council?
I became aware of the Scottish Refugee Council a while back. I looked into it more on the website and found the organisation’s work to be really important – and much needed!
Why do you want to fundraise for us?
The world is an unstable place, and I’m keen to support Scottish Refugee Council in their efforts to ensure those seeking refuge here are treated with dignity and compassion. This feels especially urgent now, as refugees are, sadly, increasingly demonised. Even the smallest donation helps support the incredible work this charity does.
What’s your history of running? Are you aiming for a personal best, or just looking to complete the marathon?
I started running during lockdown and have completed numerous races up to marathon distance, including the Amsterdam Marathon. I was supposed to run the Chicago Marathon in 2024, but an ESTA issue meant I couldn’t take part.
Training for London has been a bit interrupted by illness and a busy school term (I’m a teacher), so I’m hoping to finish in a decent time – but I won’t be chasing a PB. My personal best is just under four hours, but that’s not on the cards this time!
A huge thank you to Graeme for representing Scottish Refugee Council at this year’s London Marathon and for being part of the bigger picture – helping to build a more welcoming and inclusive Scotland for refugees and asylum seekers.
