On this page you will find what documents you need to open a bank account and what you can do if you don’t have all the documents.

Bank account

If you don’t have a bank account in the UK, try to open one as soon as possible.

If you find it hard to get a bank account you can apply for benefits before getting a bank account and request your benefit payments in cash. This cash can be withdrawn at PayPoint outlets in local shops and newsagents.

To open a bank account, you need:

Proof of identity – a valid form of your photo identification for example:

  • Biometric residence permit (BRP)
  • Home Office travel document
  • If you don’t have a BRP some banks may accept your ARC card or Bail 201 form with your photo as an identification
  • Current passport if you have one

Proof of address - a recent letter proving where you live for example:

  • Home Office asylum decision letter showing your address or letters from Jobcentre or GP practice

If you don’t have all the documents to open an account:

Proof of identity – a valid form of your photo identification for example:

  • Check with the bank what other proof of address they will accept
  • Try more than one bank. If one bank refuses, try a different bank
  • Try to open an account online first if you have internet access, a web-enabled device (smartphone or computer) and can follow online instructions in English. Most banks allow online applications
  • Try to open a basic bank account if a bank refuses to open a current account
  • Try online-only banks such as Monzo or Revolut. You will need to download their app on your phone and be confident using the app
  • Try to get a support letter from a charity or agency that knows you
