On this page you will find information on your education rights and entitlements after you get leave to remain (permission to stay in the UK).
Refugee status and humanitarian protection allows you to access the same government funding for college and university studies as any other UK resident. This opens more education options for you. After getting leave to remain, you may find it hard to plan for your own or your children’s education while also moving out of asylum accommodation, applying for benefits or looking for work. However, it is important to know your rights and prepare for some practical changes.

Pre-school, primary and secondary school
Every child aged 3-4 in Scotland is entitled to 1,140 hours of funded early learning and childcare annually. All children in Scotland have the right to receive a school education from the age of 5 until they turn 16.
English language classes for adults
English classes for adults are called ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).
If you need to learn English, you can take these classes. However, ESOL classes might have long waiting lists. You can apply for ESOL courses in multiple places like colleges and community classes.
Search locally to find ESOL classes and how to join. You can look for ESOL classes at:
- Colleges: they mostly offer part-time English courses. These are usually funded, but some may charge a course fee. Check if the course is free before you join. You can search for colleges: ESOL Courses in Scotland
- Charities: charities such as WEA Scotland and Glasgow ESOL Forum offer some classes
- Councils: they might offer free community ESOL classes. Check your local council’s website for details
Learning English is important for education or employment. If you already have English qualifications in another country, you can check their equivalents on the SQA’s ESOL Qualification website.
Online English learning resources
Online English learning resources are a useful way to learn and practice your English. Here are some websites to help you and your children learn English at home. You will need a stable internet connection and a device like a mobile phone, tablet or laptop to use these sites.

Qualifications from other countries
If you have English language qualifications from another country, you can check their equivalents on the SQA’s ESOL Qualification website.
If you have qualifications from another country, you might be able to get them recognised in the UK. UK ENIC helps with recognising international qualifications. You can apply to UK-ENIC for a Statement of Comparability, but there is a cost. You will also need to provide certified translations if your documents are not in English. However, a translation waiver service is available with a fee, so you don’t need to provide certified translations if your qualifications are in Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian.
