Get a share code from your e-Visa

On this page, you will find information about share codes and a short video showing how to get a share code from your eVisa. You will need this code to prove your immigration status and rights. For example, it can be used to prove your right to work, open a bank account, access education, get a driving license or travel abroad.

What is a share code?

The share code is a 9-character unique code made up of numbers and letters. You can get a share code from your eVisa to prove your immigration status and right to work. It is valid for 90 days. You can reuse it as many times in that 90-day period. You need to get your share code from the online service: view and prove your immigration status: get a share code.

Updating your UKVI account details

You need to access your UKVI account to view your eVisa and generate a share code. Make sure you keep your UKVI account details up to date. For example, if your phone number or email address changed, you should sign into your UKVI account to change those details. If someone else created the account using their email address and phone number, you should update the account details with your own email and phone number. Use the following link to sign in and update your UKVI account: Update your UK Visas and Immigration account details. This link is different from the online service you use to sign in to view and prove your immigration status: get a share code.

Helpful tips for using your share code

Take a picture of your share code and keep it on your phone as you may not have internet connection everywhere
Remember, the share code lasts for 90 days. You can reuse it as many times as you like during that 90-day period
Create another share code, if you forget to save your share code number
Remember that you need different share codes to prove your immigration status and your right to work. Your immigration status share code will start with 'S' and your right to work share code will start with 'W'
Make sure to save the identity document number or UKVI customer number you use to access your UKVI account
Regularly sign in to your UKVI account to view your eVisa and generate share codes to help you get used to it
