Give refugees urgent help this winter
Scotland is in the grip of a housing crisis and it’s having a devastating impact on people fleeing war and persecution. As the temperatures drop, thousands of refugees are at risk of homelessness.
“I was homeless for three months. Sometimes I was sleeping outside. Some days friends would bring me food but some days I didn’t eat.” - Hamid, 57
When Hamid called our Refugee Support Service he was sleeping in a friend’s car and had no money for food.
Hamid has a serious heart condition. Being trapped in the hostile asylum system for over a decade has badly affected his mental and physical health.
We worked to get Hamid off the streets and into emergency housing.
With our help, he registered with a GP and is now getting the medical treatment he so badly needs.
We also made sure he can buy hot food and has access to warm clothes.
He said: “Scottish Refugee Council saved me. They helped in every way you can imagine.”
Hamid now has somewhere safe and warm to stay while he waits for a decision on his asylum claim.
One in three people who contact our helpline are facing homelessness and financial hardship.
