Asylum seekers in Glasgow facing eviction and who have exhausted appeal rights are to be offered free legal advice from Tuesday 14 August.
The joint initiative between the legal and third sector is an emergency response to Serco announcing plans to forcibly evict people from its properties.
Free, confidential legal advice will be offered by experienced housing and immigration lawyers, at Scottish Refugee Council’s office in Glasgow City Centre every Tuesday from 10am until 4pm. Interpreters will be available.
Wafa Shaheen, Head of Integration at Scottish Refugee Council said: “It’s really important to remember that everyone has rights, even when facing eviction and homelessness and destitution. These surgeries come at a crucial time when people need help to access those rights and to get the support they are entitled to.”
Jen Ang, Partner at JustRight Scotland, adds: “These free legal surgeries are an excellent demonstration of the power of third sector and legal collaboration, and of the shared commitment to social justice that brought these experienced organisations together to provide a rapid, flexible and effective response to individuals in crisis.”
This initiative will be delivered by Scottish Refugee Council, Shelter Scotland, JustRight Scotland, Legal Services Agency, Latta & Co Solicitors and Govan Law Centre. They are supported by our third sector partner organisations: Govan Community Project, British Red Cross and ASH Project.
