Capturing the moment at Refugee Week 2011

I can’t believe another Refugee Week Scotland has come to an end, although my tired body would say otherwise. I had a fantastic week and I hope you did too.

Refugee Week 2011, packed with amazing events

There were so many fantastic events this year – from moving exhibitions like Red Road by Robert Ormerod, dynamic new work True Colours from Ignite, which played to a packed theatre house and damp eyes!  There were also the  moving accounts of personal stories from the International Women’s group and delicious food from around the world at Puthu Yugam.  I only wish I could have been in two or even three places at once during Refugee Week so I could attend more events.

Thanks to everyone for making Refugee Week a success

It has been a real privilege for me to meet so many incredible people and to work with such great organisations.  Without them Refugee Week Scotland would not have been the success it was, so thanks to everyone –those who organised events and all of you who attended events and got involved.

Courage, capturing the importance of the Refugee Convention, then and now

Sixty years ago the UN Refugee Convention was created and it has saved millions of lives since then.  All of Refugee Week 2011 celebrated this vital document and the crucial role it plays in protecting those fleeing war and persecution.

Nothing captures this better than, Courage: 60 Years of the UN Refugee Convention a very special short film, made by six people who have all come to Scotland seeking safety and a new beginning.  They worked with Media Co-op and Scottish Refugee Council to research, film, direct and produce this extraordinary film.

Keep Courage going – share the film!

While Refugee Week 2011 has come to a close, the film Courage is available on You Tube and we would like as many people as possible to see it.  Please continue to pass on this important, insightful and inspiring film today and throughout the year.

I look forward to seeing you next year. In the meantime, please let me know of any arts events that you have planned and we’ll highlight them in our calendar.
