Broadening understanding about refugees issues

As Training and Events Officer, the majority of my time is happily committed to organising and delivering our external training programme.  While the courses we provide cover a range of different subjects, the common theme within them all is that delegates leave better equipped to work confidently, sensitively and supportively with people seeking sanctuary.

Delegates come from a broad range of organisations, from statutory providers such as Strathclyde Police and NHS services, to funders like Big Lottery Fund, and many voluntary organisations including Red Cross and Barnardos.  Most trainees come from a background of providing a direct service such as advice and advocacy; however it is not unusual have people attend from areas such as policy makers including the Scottish Government and from those with an academic interest.

Raising awareness and broadening understanding about refugees issues

I always begin by asking the group about their experience of refugee issues and what they hope to learn. Overwhelmingly the most common response is that they feel they have picked up sporadic knowledge but that they are wary of the gaps in their understanding and wary of giving poor advice.  In many ways I am relieved when people express this concern.  It reveals both that they are conscious of the misinformation that exists in this area, and that poorly informed advice and policy work, however well meaning, can be disastrous for those concerned.

Varied topics and diverse delegates

Our courses include those examining main refugee nationalities and highlight the factors influencing why people have to flee their countries and where their journeys take them.  Other topics include the refugee convention and UK asylum process, and how to communicate through an interpreter.  We also devote a full day course to the needs and experiences of refugee women.

The combination of varied topics, diverse delegates and an every changing subject matter mean that every training course is unique and vital.  I would not have it any other way!

Perhaps it is most clearly evidenced by one delegate’s feedback that the training was  “Totally comprehensive, educational, shocking and brilliantly done.”

Hope to see you at one of our upcoming training sessions!
