Shami Chakrabarti gave a powerful speech at our AGM

Armed with Flip cameras, our volunteer bloggers attended our Annual General Meeting last week. Read MF’s report.

Scottish Refugee Council’s Annual General Meeting was held at Edinburgh City Chambers on Friday 14 January 2011. People from many different organisations had attended.

This year Scottish Refugee Council invited Shami Chakrabarti, the Director of Liberty, as their guest speaker.

Before the meeting I had a chance to do a short interview with Shami Chakrabarti. I found her a nice and caring person who is spending her life to make changes in the UK so people can live in a better way.

At the meeeting Shami Chakrabarti gave a powerful speech about refugees and asylum seekers in the UK in terms of Human Rights, that pleased everyone in the meeting. She mentioned that the importance of language and policy, and explained how the cuts will affect asylum seekers’ lives in the UK.

She also mentioned some problems that Asylum seekers encounter in the UK. She said how it is terrifying when the people are sent back to where they are suffering from torture. And she was pleased with the work that is being done for asylum seekers and refugees in Scotland.

More to be done

Human Rights has been a major issue throughout human history. And still today people face issues from freedom of expression to the lack of shelter in many places.

But there are people who care and respect others’ life and try to make changes in their society to ensure everyone has an equal right. Asylum seekers can be a good example of experiencing human rights abuses in their own country that force them to leave to looking for refuge. But in many cases in their new life again they have to struggle with other human rights discriminations.
