Scottish Refugee Council CEO Sabir Zazai shares this message for the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – a document that has saved the lives and dignity of many, including his own. WATCH NOW.

“Monday 10th of December is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – a document that has saved the lives and dignity of many including myself and countless women, men, and children who are forced to flee their homes.

It’s an important reminder to all of us that the conflicts and wars that people are fleeing did not only start with bombing and shelling, they started with the denial of basic human rights.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights protected me 20 years ago when I was forced to flee Afghanistan and, despite the hostile environment that some governments are trying to create, it continues to protect vulnerable people today.

Human rights are not exclusive – they apply to all of us. They also apply to those who need our safety and protection and for that I’d say that refugee rights are our rights.”
