Conference microphones

Asylum seekers and refugees in the UK need better protection than they are currently receiving.

This was the call from leading figures from the field of human rights speaking at our annual conference on Friday 30 October. Speakers included Nico Juetten, acting Head of Policy for Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People and Carl Watt, Director of Stonewall Scotland.

This is a crucial time for the asylum debate, as the UK Government reviews the asylum process. Our conference was an opportunity to call for united support for those who desperately need our protection from war, persecution and human rights abuses.

Taking part in the afternoon panel debate was Mike Kaye, co-ordinator of the Still Human Still Here campaign. We caught up with him over lunchtime to ask how giving asylum seekers the right to work could help protect them from destitution.
