Across the world, the life and work of our national poet Robert Burns will be remembered and celebrated on his birthday on 25 January.
A strong humanitarian sentiment runs through much of Burns’ writing and his words extend the hand of friendship across the centuries. His short poem O Wert Thou in the Cauld Blast, speaks of his instinctive desire to offer protection and solace:‘I’d shelter thee, I’d shelter thee’
In Scotland, people from all over the world and many new Scots will get together to celebrate his life and the diversity of Scotland’s rich heritage and culture.Here are some of the events happening to celebrate Burns and Scottish heritage:
Interfaith Glasgow Burns Night Ceilidh
Saturday 21 January from 1pm-7pm, Kelvinbridge Parish function hall
Asylum seekers, refugees and migrants are invited to this special Burns Night event hosted by Interfaith Glasgow which runs regular events to help people new to Scotland learn about their new home in a fun and interactive way. And nothing could be more fun and interactive than a Ceilidh dance! Food will also be served, including vegetarian haggis. More details on their Facebook page.
BEMIS Celebrates BURNS: A Toast Tae the Lassies
25 January, 8pm-11pm, The Old Fruitmarket
BEMIS, an umbrella body supporting the development of the Ethnic Minorities Voluntary Sector in Scotland, is holding Burns Night event to celebrate Rabbie’s internationalist outlook and egalitarian spirit.
Part of Celtic Connections, their event places emphasis on female musicians and women’s central role within cultural traditions – a focus of which Burns would doubtless wholeheartedly approve. Attendees can look forward to performances from Jamaican roots-reggae artist Brina and her high-energy Tribal Global Collective, and Pakistani singer Sanam Marvi, among others.

Scottish Faiths Action for Refugees is holding an event focussing on sharing culture, making friends and having the opportunity to learn or practice English in a relaxed setting. More details to follow soon.
Maryhill Integration Network’s Burns Night Celebration
8 February, Maryhill Community Centre, 5.30pm – 7.30pm
This event is a chance for different communities, especially those new to Scotland, to meet and learn more about the country that they now call home. Come and enjoy an evening of poetry, song, and dance. More details to follow soon.
