Refugee Week Scotland Opening Concert – 18 June

Less than a week to go until Refugee Week Scotland (18 – 24 June) begins.  And with over 100 events there’s loads of ways you can get involved, including a first for Refugee Week Scotland – our exciting opening concert on 18 June with Mercury Nominated musician King Creosote.

There’s also lots of ways for you to actually participate in events, whether it’s theatre, exhibits or even workshops – many of them free.

Some of the many participatory events include:

Spirit Photography Project 8 June – 22 July at Trongate 103 

This year our theme of Refugee Week celebrates Spirit – of our communities; of Scotland; and particularly of those individuals who have faced unimaginable situations and find themselves here, in a place they call home.  Our Spirit project celebrates refugees in film and photos.

And you can contribute to our online Spirit gallery by sending us your pictures and short video clips about what spirit means to you.

Sound-Walks: Audio Technology Workshops with Scottish Music Centre 4-11 June

Scottish Music Centre, City Halls (Free but must book in advance)

  Using of state of the art recording equipment at this workshop you’ll learn audio editing skills and capture sounds around you. Your recordings will form part of an online audio gallery hosted on the Scottish Music Centre website.

Celebrating Women: Activity Day on 16 June at Kelvingrove Museum (Education Suite) 

Celebrate the skills, contributions and spirit of women from refugee backgrounds at this women-focused event. In addition to a tour of the gallery, this learning exchange includes discussion, tai chi and an orchestra workshop from Live Music Now. Lunch provided and children welcome.

My Glasgow Walking tours – 17, 20 and 22 June (Glasgow various locations £3/5)

Join Scottish Refugee Council for three unique walking tours of Glasgow. Led by women from refugee backgrounds, these tours explore Glasgow’s history and share stories of life and memories of home.

Week-long Theatre Reportage Workshops led by Annet Henneman 18 – 23 June  at The Tron Theatre. (Free for Asylum Seekers & Refugees) 

These workshops will develop a performance about the human spirit with actors, activists, refugee and asylum seekers from Glasgow. To be performed at St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art on Saturday 23 June, 7pm – 10pm. 

Scottish Refugee Policy Forum: Policy and Cultural Awareness Day on 16 June at KATS, 1 Fountainwell Square (Free) 

Scottish Refugee Policy Forum is a refugee-led organisation representing refugees and asylum seekers working to ensure they have an independent, strong and collective voice. At this event hear about their 2012 Policy Conference Report and join in celebrating diverse cultural  through food, clothing, music and dance.

And take your pick from 36 community events from music and dance nights to exhibitions, traditional food and craft event supported by Scottish Refugee Council. The programme kicks off this Saturday with Scottish Refugee Policy Forum’s Policy and Cultural Awareness Day.

Hearts Unspoken Workshops for Community Groups and Schools on 18 June at Tron Theatre (Free but must be booked in advance)  

These workshops explore the methodology and issues behind playwright and director Sam Rowe’s recent production Hearts Unspoken, based on interviews with gay male asylum seekers.

Burrell for Adults: Collaborative Collage Art Class on 20 June at The Burrell Collection (Free but must be booked in advanced) 

Get practical in this special Refugee Week Adult Art class. All backgrounds and abilities welcome. Equipment and materials supplied.

Burrell for Families: Treasure Makers Art Workshop on 23 June at The Burrell Collection (Free but must be booked in advance) 

At these creative workshops you’ll be helping to make a huge piece of treasure inspired by a special gold disc from Africa.

Extensive programme of theatre

Join us at the Tron Theatre, our festival hub, for excerpts from the much anticipated Glasgow Girls, developed by Cora Bissett (Director of award-winning production Roadkill), and work from Alison-Julia Taudevin, Ignite Theatre, Ankur Productions, Maryhill Integration Network, Albscott, Seeds of Thought, Theatre Found and Articulate Theatre.
