I have always been impressed by Scottish Refugee Council’s values and its projects to support refugees, as well as its recognition of the contribution that refugees make to Scotland.
When I heard the charity was recruiting volunteer ambassadors for Refugee Festival Scotland, I wanted to be part of this. My application was shortlisted and I was delighted to hear that my interview was successful.
The festival is a statement of solidarity, tackling false pre-conceptions, prejudice and racial discrimination. It does this by offering a cultural exchange of community interaction. It’s a country-wide celebration of music, dance, debates, films and more. And this year Scottish Refugee Council also celebrates its 30th anniversary since the organisation first opened its doors to Vietnamese refugees.
I recently attended the volunteer induction day where I met some of the great people I’ll be working with. It’s a real mix of people: some are studying human rights, others are working in the charity sector, and a few are planning travel to far-flung places. The volunteers all share the same desire to make the festival a huge success and support Scottish Refugee Council in their work.
What I am looking forward to over the festival
I hope to meet more people who are from different parts of the world and to hear their stories and experiences.
One event I’m particularly looking forward to volunteering at is the Women’s Interfaith Fair on 17 June, where attendees will have the chance to learn how to tie a sari. I’d really like to try on a sari and perhaps buy for myself.
