On the 26 November we launched the postcard campaign to highlight some of the experiences of women seeking asylum.
During the project, community artist Nadine Gorency worked with people at our drop-ins to produce pieces of art work. One piece from each drop-in was used for the postcard designs.
We invited members of the public to complete the reverse of the postcards, endorsing the specific aims of the campaign and send it to the Home Secretary Theresa May who is also Minister for Women.
Calls to action!
Our campaign calls on the Home Secretary to ensure those seeking asylum are afforded the following rights:
- Those who have experienced rape or domestic violence in their country of birth should receive a comparable standard of treatment, throughout the UK asylum system, to women who have suffered rape or domestic violence in the criminal justice system;
- Those detained in immigration removal centres should receive, at a minimum, a comparable standard of treatment and facilities to women in prisons in the UK; and
- Those who are pregnant should receive a comparable standard of ante- and post-natal provision and benefits to women settled in the UK
Every Single Woman
We also support the Every Single Woman campaign under the Women’s Asylum Charter, which has been endorsed by over 200 organisations including the Refugee Council and Scottish Refugee Council. The campaign focuses on the disparity in the treatment of women who are seeking asylum compared with women settled in the UK.
Building bridges within the community
The aim of our project is not only to support the Every Single Woman campaign, but to offer opportunities for people from different cultures to meet and learn about one another, promoting social bonds and bridges. This in turn supports real integration, resulting in safer, more secure communities.
