John Wilkes and David Fraser both gave speeches at our AGM

One of our volunteer bloggers had the opportunity to quiz Liberty Director Shami Chakrabarti on issues close to his heart at our AGM.

On Friday 14 January at Edinburgh City Chambers, human rights campaigners, Scottish Refugee Council staff, volunteers and other organisations took part in the AGM.

After the short welcoming messages by Deputy Provost Rob Munn and by the Chair of Scottish Refugee Council’s Board, David Fraser, Scottish Refugee Council’s Chief Executive John Wilkes gave a brilliant speech.

The main communication of the day came from Shami Chakrabati, Director of Liberty. She fights, campaigns and defends human rights and liberties. I had the chance to interview her before the AGM.

Since its creation, Liberty had proposed many policies about civil liberties and has advocated for people in danger of being removed to their home country home where they risk their human rights being breached by their government.

Her speech was warmly applauded by the audience. Everybody left the meeting smiling and with joy, because her speech brought hope for vulnerable and ordinary people. But there’s still a long way to go.
