Refugee Week

I am excited to launch our programme for Refugee Week Scotland 2012. Brave, generous, inspiring, challenging, educational, moving, ambitious – our programme is all of this and more.

From 18 – 24 June, thousands of people across Scotland, will create, watch and participate in over 100 events. From the Borders to the Orkney Islands, our unique festival represents the wealth and diversity of cultures all across our country and celebrates Scotland as a place of sanctuary.

So what can you expect to see at Refugee Week this year?

Take your pick from films, exhibitions, food fares, community celebrations, plays, gigs and much more!

Learn about the inspiring Glasgow Girls, in Cora Bissett’s new musical; share in Spirit, our brand new exhibition from refugees in Glasgow at Trongate 103; take in a film; or hang out with us in our festival hub at the Tron!

New events

This year we are particularly delighted to be working with a number of new community groups and arts organisations, as the festival expands and grows.

I cannot wait for our first ever Opening Concert, headlined by King Creosote and curated by our new friends and supporters Fence Records.

Spirit

This is my first year coordinating Refugee Week Scotland and what has struck me as being most unique about it is the passion, dedication and commitment the individuals and communities involved bring. Without them we could not bring you this important cultural event.

Considering this, our theme for this year, Spirit, seems particularly apt. We are celebrating the spirit of our communities; of Scotland; and particularly of those individuals who have faced unimaginable situations, and find themselves here, in a place they call home.

Why is it so important?

The week is a chance for us to shine a light on communities across Scotland and celebrate their vibrancy. Many events highlight a dialogue between all of our communities.

Show us your spirit!

Tell us what you think – join us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter or even send us a Refugee Week blog review.

You can also enter one of our many competitions and win prizes.

We want this important cultural celebration to continue for years to come and you can donate to our Refugee Week Fundraising Appeal will help us do this.

Finally, have you seen the new Refugee Week programme? It’s had a revamp! We love it, and hope you do too!  There’s something for everyone.

See you there!
